What Happens in a Free Website Consultation (and What Doesn't)

Anita Marie ·

If you’ve ever hovered over a “Book a Free Consultation” button and then clicked away, you’re not alone.

Maybe you weren’t sure what you’d be asked. Maybe you worried you’d need to have everything figured out first. Or maybe you’ve been on a “free” call before that turned into a 45-minute sales pitch, and you’d rather not do that again.

I get it. So let me pull back the curtain and show you exactly what happens when you book a free consultation with me, and just as importantly, what doesn’t.

Before the Call: Nothing to Prepare

You don’t need a polished plan, a mood board or a budget spreadsheet. If you have a website already, I’ll take a look at it beforehand so we don’t spend your time on a tour.

If it helps you feel ready, jot down two or three things that frustrate you about your current website or brand. “I’m embarrassed to send people to it” is a perfectly good answer. So is “I don’t even know where to start.”

The First 10 Minutes: Your Business, Not Your Website

We start with you. Who do you work with? What do you offer? Where are your clients coming from right now, and where would you like them to come from?

This part matters more than most people expect. A website isn’t a digital brochure. It’s a tool that should help the right people find you, trust you and book with you. I can’t tell you what your site needs until I understand what your business needs.

The Middle 15 Minutes: What’s Working and What Isn’t

Next, we look at your current online presence together. That usually means your website, and sometimes your Instagram or email signature too, because consistency across all of them is a big part of how people decide whether to trust you.

I’ll share what I notice, in plain English. For example:

  • Your homepage doesn’t say who you help until the third scroll
  • Your booking link is buried in the footer
  • Your colors and fonts on Instagram don’t match your website
  • The site looks great on a laptop but is hard to use on a phone

If you’ve read How to Turn Website Visitors Into Discovery Calls, you’ll recognize some of this. Often the fix is smaller than you think.

The Last 5 Minutes: Your Next Step

We wrap up with a clear recommendation. Sometimes that’s a full rebrand plus a new website. Sometimes it’s a simple three-page website. And sometimes it’s “you don’t need me right now, here are two things you can change yourself this week.”

If you’re still unsure whether your brand or your website is the real issue, this is where we sort that out. (I wrote more about that question in Do You Need a Rebrand or Just a Website Refresh?)

What You’ll Walk Away With

Even if we never work together, you should leave the call with:

  • A clearer picture of what’s holding your website back
  • One to three practical priorities, in order
  • An honest sense of whether this is a DIY job or worth getting help with
  • Answers to any questions you’ve been sitting on

What Doesn’t Happen

This is the part I want to be really clear about.

  • No hard sell. If working together makes sense, I’ll explain how it would look. If it doesn’t, I’ll say so.
  • No pressure to decide on the call. You can take time, think it over, talk to your partner or simply sit with it.
  • No judgment. I’ve seen every kind of DIY website, outdated template and “my nephew built it in 2017” situation. You won’t shock me.
  • No tech jargon. If I use a word that doesn’t make sense, stop me. That’s on me, not you.

Why I Do It This Way

The women I work with are busy running their businesses. They don’t need another person telling them everything is wrong. They need someone who can look at the whole picture and say, “Here’s what matters most, and here’s what can wait.”

A consultation is simply the easiest way to find out if I’m that person for you.

Ready When You Are

If your website has been on your “someday” list for a while, a 30-minute conversation is a gentle place to start. You can book your free consultation here whenever it feels right.

And if you’re already leaning toward a fresh look, I’m currently offering a website rebrand special for the first five women business owners who sign on. It comes in two versions: a full rebrand with new colors and fonts plus a three-page website, or a three-page website on its own. We can talk through which one fits during your call.

No pressure. Just a clear next step.
